BERKELEY – Cal head coach Sonny Dykes announced Wednesday that linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk (Roseville, CA/American River College/Roseville HS) has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Cal football program. Kunaszyk was a Freshman All-American, the Defensive Player of the Year in the NorCal Division of the California Community College Athletic Association and a first-team all-conference player as a 2015 redshirt freshman at American River College.
Kunaszyk led all California junior college players with 118 tackles in 2015 while adding 7.5 tackles for loss (-33 yards), 3.0 sacks (-25 yards), three pass breakups and one forced fumble to help the 2015 Beavers to a 7-4 overall record, a 4-1 mark in the NorCal Division of the CCCAA and a spot in the Gridiron Classic Bowl.
“Jordan was as productive as any junior college linebacker in the country last season,” Dykes said. “He's a good athlete with excellent size and great range. We expect him to compete for a starting spot at linebacker right away, as well as jump into the mix on special teams because of his size, strength and athleticism. Jordan is exactly the type of player we are looking for.”
“I'm excited to become part of the Cal family,” Kunaszyk said. “I can't wait to get around my teammates, coaches and the facilities. I'm fired up for this season and ready to get to work. Go Bears!”
Kunaszyk, who used his redshirt season at American River College in 2014, will have three years to use his three remaining seasons of collegiate eligibility when he begins his Cal career as a third-year sophomore in 2016.
Kunaszyk prepped at Roseville High School, where the two-time All-Sierra Foothill League selection combined for 178 tackles, 30.0 tackles and 5.0 sacks during his two varsity campaigns in 2012 and 2013. Kunaszyk recorded 101 tackles, 21.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, one interception and one forced fumble in 10 games as a first-team all-conference choice and team captain during his 2013 senior season. As a second-team all-league pick during his 2012 junior campaign, he contributed 77 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Kunaszyk is the 27th member of Cal's 2016 recruiting class.
