The ILB duo of Kunaszyk and Weaver earn All-American honors

With the 2018 regular season in the books, our California Golden Bears continue to earn recognition for their stellar performance. The ILB duo of Jordan Kunaszyk and Evan Weaver—two standout representatives of our Tonesetters—were already named to the first and second All-Pac-12 teams; beyond this, these Bears have earned national recognition.

Kunaszyk and Weaver were named second-team All-Americans by Sports Illustrated or Pro Football Focus College, respectively.

The two were an absolute terror for opposing offenses. Kunaszyk is a redshirt-senior, a captain for the 2018 season, and a “chef” by some standards. On the field, he amassed 133 total tackles (83 solo) through the 12-game regular season—that’s a whopping 11.1 tackles per game! His single-game record was an insane 22 tackles against the UC Los Angeles Bruins. On top of that, Kunaszyk added four sacks, five forced fumbles, and one recovered fumble.

Not to be undone, junior Weaver squashed that figure with 142 total tackles (77 solo)—that’s 11.8 tackles per game! Weaver put up 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, and one touchdown to lead the Bears in scoring in our upset over the Washington Huskies. His single-game high in tackles was 19 against the Colorado Buffaloes.

The two are a phenomenal duo on the field and great friends off the field—but also polar opposites in several respects.

Kunaszyk is majoring in sociology and Weaver is majoring in American studies. Congrats to the pair for a season of phenomenal play that deserved this recognition.
